#25 ASK KATARINA: Is Etiquette Only for the Rich? 🤔

Dear readers,

When we think of etiquette, images of grand dining rooms, gloved handshakes, and aristocratic titles often come to mind. Historically, these customs were closely associated with the wealthy and elite, leading to the perception that etiquette is only for the rich. However, this view is not only outdated but also misses the broader and more inclusive nature of etiquette.

ETIQUETTE DEFINED
Etiquette is essentially about respect, consideration, and kindness in our interactions with others. It encompasses a wide range of behaviours, from table manners to digital communication. While it may have been codified and popularised by the upper classes, the core principles of etiquette are universal, timeless and don’t cost anything.

ACCESSIBILITY FOR ALL 🤗
Etiquette transcends socioeconomic boundaries. Simple acts like saying "please" and "thank you," holding the door open for someone, or listening attentively in conversations are all forms of etiquette that require no financial investment. These small gestures can significantly enhance our daily interactions and create a more harmonious community.

PRACTICAL BENEFITS 🤝
Practising good etiquette can have tangible benefits regardless of one’s social or economic status. For instance, polite and respectful behaviour can improve personal and professional relationships, leading to better opportunities and a more positive social environment. In the workplace, good manners can distinguish you as a considerate and professional individual, paving the way for career advancement.

MODERN-DAY ETIQUETTE📱
In today’s digital age, etiquette has evolved to include online behaviour. Digital etiquette, or "netiquette," is crucial as more of our interactions move online. Simple practices like responding to emails promptly, being respectful on social media, and avoiding all-caps in texts demonstrate that etiquette is more relevant than ever and applicable to everyone.

CULTURAL VARIATIONS 🌍
Etiquette is also culturally diverse. What is considered polite in one culture might be different in another. This highlights the importance of understanding and respecting cultural differences, which can foster better communication and mutual respect in our increasingly globalised world.

SO WHAT’S THE VERDICT?
Etiquette is not an exclusive domain of the rich; it is a set of guidelines that help us navigate social interactions smoothly and respectfully.
Naturally, a set of more refined manners might be needed in a 3-star Michelin restaurant than in a casual, budget-friendly diner, but the principles of good manners remain the same.
Remember, etiquette is about making others feel valued and respected, and that’s something we can all afford.

I wish you all a beautiful day filled with polite manners.

Yours sincerely,
Katarina
