''Hey! I am one of those people who get hiccups quite often and I was wondering if it’s rude?''
C.
Dear C.,
thank you for your question!
Generally speaking, getting hiccups is not rude as it is a natural, involuntary body process which you cannot control up to its full extent. However, with that being said, we can still control what we do AFTER the hiccups is already there.
Many of us have developed techniques that help us to get rid of hiccups pretty fast, and the internet is also full of ''bulletproof remedies'' (some are questionable, I do have to admit).
If we are in public space, especially one that is quiet, it is good manners to close the mouth so we limit the hiccups noise. Additionally, we should try to get rid of the hiccups as soon as possible - perhaps by taking a few sips of water or taking some deep breaths.
I hope you found my answer helpful.
I wish you a beautiful day ahead!
Yours sincerely,
Katarina
