#30 ASK KATARINA: Why Do We Keep Elbows Off the Table?

''Hi Katarina. I wanted to ask about the no elbows on the table rule. Why does it exist? Aren’t we past it?''
T.

Dear T.,
thank you for your question!

In Western dining etiquette, the rule of no elbows on the table has two main reasons out of which one might be slightly outdated, but the other one is equally valid just as before. Let me explain:

REASON 1: Encouraging Proper Posture
Resting your elbows on the table often leads to slouching, which can make you appear uninterested. Good posture not only helps you look more engaged and confident but also aids in better digestion and breathing. By keeping your elbows off the table, you're more likely to sit up straight and maintain a polished, poised appearance. Back in the day, slouching used to be a big no-no, but nowadays it could also reflect a casual and relaxed atmosphere.

REASON 2: Respecting Your Neighbours’ Space
When you place your elbows on the table, you inadvertently take up more space, which can block the view for those seated on your left and right side. This can be particularly bothersome during a shared meal, as it disrupts the flow of conversation and makes it harder for others to see and engage with the group. Keeping your elbows at your sides ensures that everyone can enjoy the meal without unnecessary obstacles.

Though it may seem like a small detail, keeping your elbows off the table is a simple gesture that contributes to a more pleasant dining experience for everyone.

I wish you a beautiful day ahead!

Yours sincerely,
Katarina
