3 Tourist Etiquette Mistakes to Avoid 🌎

Dear readers,

The vacation season is in full bloom and after some long corona months spent at home in lockdown, travelling is booming once again.
But just like with anything, being a tourist in a foreign country comes with an unwritten book of etiquette rules we better stick to (unless we wish to make the news).
Here are 3 common tourist etiquette mistakes to avoid on your next trip:

1. RESEARCH MATTERS
Many travellers overlook the importance of respecting local customs, especially in sacred spaces. Being loud in churches, temples, or other holy places is not only disruptive but also disrespectful to those who are there to worship.
Always follow signs, observe local practices, and keep noise to a minimum. Additionally, remember that actions like climbing on ancient ruins, leaving litter behind, or straying off marked paths can endanger both the nature and the cultural heritage of a destination.

2. TO TIP, OR NOT TO TIP?
Tipping customs vary widely across the globe, and not doing your homework can lead to awkward situations. In some countries, tipping is expected and seen as a significant part of a service worker’s income, while in others, it can be considered offensive.
Before you dine out or take a taxi, take a few minutes to research the local tipping norms to ensure you’re showing appreciation appropriately and respectfully.

3. DOING IT FOR THE ‘GRAM
Capturing memories is a big part of travel, but it’s important to do so considerately. Taking selfies or videos in crowded places can disrupt the experience of others, especially in sensitive areas like memorials or places of worship.
Always ask permission before photographing people, particularly in cultures where this might be considered intrusive or even illegal.

Travelling with respect and awareness not only enriches our experience but also ensures that we’re leaving a positive impact on the places we visit.

So happy and respectful travelling, my dear readers!

Yours sincerely,
Katarina
