#35 ASK KATARINA: Wearing Black to a Party - YES or NO? 🤷‍♀️

''Hi Katarina. Next week my grandparents will be married for 50 years and they're giving a party at a restaurant. I know that it's inappropriate to wear black at a wedding as a woman but does it count for occasions like this too?''
E. P.

Dear E. P.,
It will be my pleasure to advise you in this dress code dilemma:

You are right that
black should be avoided at western weddings as black is usually associated with mourning in many cultures. The newlyweds could be offended by someone wishing them 'bad luck' with their choice of clothes.

However, a colour can carry various meanings and symbols and black is not an exception here either. Black colour is also the colour of elegance and sophistication and there is nothing wrong in celebrating these symbols at someone's party. I would still suggest 'lightening up' the dress though with accessories in a different colour to create a harmony.

The only 2 cases when I would not recommend wearing black to a party would be if the weather is too hot, as the choice of colour could become a burden rather than advantage. Furthermore, I would refrain from wearing black if the style of the dress is too similar to what is traditionally believed to be a 'widow's dress' in western cultures, such as long sleeves with heavy lace decorations and black veil.

Dear Emmy, I hope you will find my tips helpful and that you will enjoy your grandparents' 50th wedding anniversary!

I wish you a beautiful day ahead.

Yours sincerely,
Katarina
