4 Etiquette Tips for a Gracious Autumn Season 🍂

Dear readers,
The season of turning leaves, pumpkin spice lattes and… autumn etiquette is here!
As the seasons change, so do the norms of everyday etiquette. While some manners remain timeless, others are shaped by the weather, activities, and traditions of each season.

In today’s newsletter I am listing down 4 etiquette tips that you will use in the autumn more than in any other season. From navigating wet shoes and umbrellas to accommodating extra layers of clothing, adapting our social habits to suit the season ensures we remain considerate and prepared even when the days grow shorter and the air crisper.

Tip no. 1: MIND YOUR UMBRELLA
Autumn rains can arrive unexpectedly, and with them come slippery surfaces. When you step inside from a downpour, be sure to place your wet umbrella in a designated holder or a waterproof bag. Avoid leaving it on floors, particularly in entryways, where it can create a slipping hazard.
Consider carrying a compact umbrella with a cover for those impromptu showers, ensuring you're always prepared and considerate of your surroundings.

Tip no. 2: THE EARLIER THE BETTER
Autumn marks the beginning of the festive season, from harvest celebrations to Halloween parties and, soon enough, the holiday rush. If you're planning to host any gatherings, be mindful of sending out invitations well in advance. People's schedules tend to fill up quickly during this busy time, so giving early notice not only shows consideration but also ensures your friends and family can mark their calendars and avoid double bookings.

Tip no. 3: SHOES OFF, PLEASE
With rain and mud becoming a common part of daily life in autumn, it’s considerate to remove your shoes when entering someone’s home. Wet and muddy shoes can track dirt through clean spaces, especially as outdoor areas tend to get soggy with fallen leaves. If you’re hosting, make sure to offer a clear place for guests to store their shoes, perhaps near the entrance or with a mat and a shoe rack.
If you're visiting someone and unsure of their preference, it's always polite to ask: ''Would you prefer shoes off?''

Tip no. 4: PREPARE FOR LAYERS
As temperatures dip, people begin to layer up. Whether it’s scarves, coats, or heavier sweaters, your guests will appreciate having a designated spot to hang their extra layers. If you're hosting a party, setting up a coat rack near the entrance or improvising a cloakroom will go a long way in making guests feel comfortable and welcome.
Be mindful of offering space that’s easy to access, so guests don’t have to rummage through piles of coats when they’re ready to leave.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Autumn is a season that invites warmth, hospitality, and an extra touch of mindfulness. By embracing these tips, you’ll ensure that your social interactions are thoughtful, graceful, and full of autumn charm.

Stay cosy, stay courteous, and enjoy the season! 🍂✨
