Dear Readers,
Valentine’s Day is just a few days away, and since the 14th century, it has been associated with the celebration of love in all its forms - whether with a romantic partner, a new date, or even close friends and family. However, certain missteps - often unintentional - can turn a special occasion into an awkward or disappointing experience.
To help you navigate the big V-Day with grace and charm, I’ve put together a list of five Valentine’s Day mistakes to avoid:
Mistake no. 1: 💔 TALKING ABOUT EXES
This one may seem like a no-brainer, but it happens more often than we’d like to admit - especially if we’re fresh out of a breakup. Whether the memories are good or bad, bringing up past relationships is a surefire way to dampen the mood. It also shifts attention away from the person in front of you, who, unlike your ex, truly deserves your focus.
Mistake no. 2: ⏳ ARRIVING LATE
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: punctuality is a sign of respect. Being late, especially on a night with set reservations, can come across as careless and unappreciative. Plan ahead to be on time, and if circumstances beyond your control (such as traffic) cause a delay, be sure to inform your date as soon as possible.
Mistake no. 3: 📱 BEING ON YOUR PHONE
In today’s digital age, our phones feel like an extension of our hands (I’m guilty of this too!). But when dining with someone, nothing says “I’m not interested” like scrolling through your phone mid-dinner. For the duration of your meal, keep your phone tucked away in your handbag or jacket pocket - it can wait.
Mistake no. 4: 👗 IGNORING THE DRESS CODE
If you’re invited on a date, researching on the venue is a small yet very important detail. How casual is the place? Is there a mandatory dress code? Dressing up for the occasion will not only put you at ease at the venue, but also show respect to both you and your companion for making that little extra effort.
Mistake no. 5: 📸 OVERDOING PHOTOS FOR SOCIAL MEDIA
Not everything needs to be shared with the outer world, especially if the date is a new date. In the world of good manners, we should always ask our companion for permission before posting their photo or video online. However, letting the phone take over the evening does not only disturb the actual, real moment but also show signs of disinterest.
Whether you are celebrating Valentine’s Day with friends, your partner or a new date, by avoiding these common missteps, you will create a memorable evening for many days to come as - after all - these tips do not apply to 14th of February only but are universal all year long.
I wish you all a beautiful Valentine’s Day!
Yours sincerely,
