Dear Readers,
In my latest newsletter, I shared my top three tips for serving wine elegantly at home. But perhaps it’s also time to discuss what comes before the actual serving. Wine shopping can easily become a stressful task if we don’t know which price range includes good-quality wines.
It’s easy to assume that a higher price tag guarantees better quality. After all, many connoisseurs and sommeliers tend to gravitate towards premium wines, and the wine business itself thrives on exclusivity, with collectors investing thousands of dollars in vintage bottles. However, the truth is: good wine doesn’t always have to break the bank!
Here are a few tips to help you find excellent wine without overspending:
1. EXPLORE LESSER KNOWN REGIONS
While famous regions like Bordeaux command higher prices, emerging wine regions often produce exceptional wines at a fraction of the cost. Look for bottles from places like Portugal, South Africa, or lesser-known Italian regions such as Abruzzo.
2. UNDERSTAND LABELS
Terms like "DOC" (Designation of Controlled Origin) or "IGP" (Protected Geographical Indication) in Europe indicate quality standards. Learning to decipher labels can help you identify great finds at reasonable prices.
3. GO FOR YOUNGER WINES
Aging adds complexity to wine, but it also increases the price. Many younger wines (those aged less than three years) offer vibrant and enjoyable flavours without the premium cost.
4. TRY ‘‘HOUSE-WINE’’ WHEN DINING OUT
Restaurants in wine-producing countries, such as Italy, often serve “house wine” that’s locally sourced, affordable, and surprisingly delicious. These wines reflect the region’s authenticity and often pair wonderfully with the local cuisine.
5. LOOK FOR REVIEWS AND AWARDS
Affordable wines that win awards or receive good reviews often outperform their price bracket. Keep an eye on wine blogs for recommendations.
While I don’t recommend going for the absolute cheapest wine at your local grocery store (think wines packed in plastic bottles or cardboard boxes), you’ll find that many wines can be surprisingly enjoyable even without a hefty price tag.
At the end of the day, wine is about personal enjoyment. So whether your knowledge of wine remains on the sidelines or you enjoy collecting vintage bottles, both are perfectly valid ways to appreciate this timeless beverage.
Wishing you a lot of adventure on your next wine shopping trip.
Yours sincerely,
Katarina
