Invitation Etiquette ✉️

Dear readers,

In my last week’s newsletter, we dived deep into the secrets behind a successful and thought-through holiday invitation which plays a crucial role when inviting guests to any festive gathering.

In this week’s newsletter, the coin will flip and we will look at invitations etiquette from the guests’ perspective. How to gracefully respond to an invitation? Is there a difference between responding to a letter invitation and a digital one?

Even in the world of modern etiquette, responding to invitations is an art form that speaks volumes about your thoughtfulness and grace. An RSVP isn’t just a formality, it’s a way to show respect to your host and ensure smooth event planning.
Here’s how to respond to both traditional letter invitations and digital ones, with elegance:

FIRST THINGS FIRST
The term RSVP stands for the French phrase "Répondez s'il vous plaît," which translates to "Please respond." It is used to request a reply from the invitee, indicating whether they will attend an event or not.
The use of RSVP in social invitations originated in 18th-century France, where French was considered the language of diplomacy and etiquette in European courts.

HOW TO RESPOND TO A DIGITAL INVITATION?

  • Respond as soon as possible: Digital invitations often come with tracking, so quick responses are ideal.
  • Use the same platform: Respond through the medium the invitation was sent, whether it’s email, an event website, or social media.
  • Keep it professional but warm: Even with digital invites, maintain a tone of elegance.
  • Mention any special considerations: If needed, confirm plus-ones, dietary restrictions or other relevant details.

Example Response: "Dear [Host’s Name], Thank you for the invitation to [Event]. I am pleased to confirm my attendance. Looking forward to it! Best regards, [Your Name]"

HOW TO RESPOND TO A LETTER INVITATION?

  • Reply in a timely manner: Ideally, respond within 3–5 days of receiving the invitation.
  • Handwrite your response: A handwritten note is a charming way to mirror the effort that went into the invitation.
  • Address the host appropriately: Use a respectful salutation like "Dear [Host’s Name]".
  • Be clear and concise: Confirm whether you are attending or not, and mention any plus-ones or dietary needs if requested.
  • Thank the host: Express gratitude for the invitation, even if you must decline.

Example Response: "Dear [Host’s Name], Thank you kindly for inviting me to [Event]. I would be delighted to attend and look forward to celebrating with you. Warm regards, [Your Name]"

Responding with grace and elegance sets the tone for a wonderful experience for both you and your host. Remember, your prompt and kind response shows consideration and helps the host to start planning the event well in advance.

I wish you all a wonderful upcoming holiday season.

Yours sincerely,
Katarina
