Out with the Old: 3 Etiquette Rules You Can Skip in 2025 🗑️

Dear Readers,

I hope you’ve enjoyed the New Year’s celebrations to the fullest and are now ready to step into the new year with fresh energy and enthusiasm.

I’m not big on New Year’s resolutions because I believe in growth all year long. With growth comes the inevitable shedding of the old—the redundant habits and practices that no longer serve us.

Etiquette is no exception. As society evolves, certain etiquette rules become obsolete and simply need to go.

To start our streak of 2025 newsletters on a fresh note, here’s a list of three etiquette rules that no longer meet their purpose - and why it’s perfectly fine to let them go:

1. NO PHONES AT THE TABLE
While scrolling on your phone during a meal can be a mood-breaker, completely banning phones at the table no longer aligns with modern life. Phones have become such an inherent part of our daily routines that sitting for three hours without touching one can seem impossible for many.

That said, doom-scrolling while dining with others is still rude. However, using your phone as a tool - whether to show a picture or check a fact related to the conversation - should no longer be blacklisted by etiquette. Moderation and purpose are key.

2. HANDWRITTEN NOTES
In the past, handwritten thank-you notes were considered the gold standard. While still lovely and appreciated, they are no longer the only acceptable way to express gratitude.

In 2025, a thoughtfully worded email or even a heartfelt voice message can be just as meaningful, especially when it’s timely. Save handwritten notes for truly special occasions, when you want to add a personal, memorable touch.

3. SILENCE AT THE DINNER TABLE
Gone are the days when proper dinner etiquette demanded hushed tones and strictly polite conversation. The idea of silence at the dinner table feels outdated in 2025, replaced by a focus on connection, inclusivity, and shared enjoyment.

A great meal isn’t just about the food - it’s about the atmosphere and the people you share it with. As long as conversations are respectful and inclusive, engaging in lively discussions is encouraged and celebrated.

As we step into 2025, the world of etiquette continues to evolve, reflecting the changing norms and expectations of our society. While timeless manners will always hold value, recognising and adapting to change is just as important.

Yours sincerely,
Katarina
