The Do’s & Don’ts of Gifting Flowers This Spring 💐

The Do’s & Don’ts of Gifting Flowers This Spring 💐

Dear Readers,

In my latest newsletter
(5 Etiquette Tips to Welcome Spring in Style), I mentioned the importance of thoughtfully decorating parties and events with fresh flowers, with consideration for people with pollen allergies.

As spring begins to bloom, vibrant blossoms are everywhere, and it definitely inspires us to surround ourselves with as many flowers as possible after a long and cold winter - unless we have allergies, that is.

As etiquette is omnipresent, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that there are certain etiquette rules surrounding flowers. And is there a better time to dive into this topic than in spring?

Here are my top tips for good flower manners:

Disclaimer: Cultural awareness is key when it comes to etiquette, and rules can vary widely depending on culture and traditions. These tips predominantly focus on Western customs.

WHEN TO BRING FLOWERS AS A GIFT
Fresh flowers make a wonderful gift when visiting someone’s home, celebrating an occasion, or expressing gratitude. A thoughtfully chosen bouquet with a personalised card will be appreciated by many; however, always consider the recipient’s preferences and the setting first. For example, flowers are perfect for a dinner party but may not be ideal for a hospital visit, where scent-sensitive environments are common.

THE MEANING BEHIND FLOWERS
Flowers carry deep symbolism, and choosing the right type is crucial to avoid unintentional messages. Here are a few examples:

Red Roses - While beautiful, they symbolise love and passion, making them unsuitable for professional settings, such as gifting to a boss.

Yellow Carnations - These can signify disappointment or rejection in some cultures, so they may not be the best choice for celebratory moments.

White Chrysanthemums - In many cultures, these are linked to funerals and mourning, making them an inappropriate gift for celebratory occasions.

BEWARE OF SCENT SENSITIVITIES
Not all flowers are suitable for every environment. Some blooms have strong fragrances that may be overwhelming, particularly for individuals with migraines.

Lilies have an intense scent and can be problematic for those sensitive to fragrance.
Hyacinths are beautiful but can be overpowering in enclosed spaces.
Jasmine has a sweet, lingering aroma that may not be appreciated by everyone.

If unsure, opt for flowers with a milder fragrance or a more neutral choice like tulips or daisies.

CULTURAL CONSIDERATIONS
Flowers hold different meanings across cultures, so research is essential before gifting them.

In Japan, giving an even number of flowers is often considered bad luck.
In Eastern Europe, red carnations are associated with military remembrance rather than casual gifting.

Taking the time to understand these cultural nuances ensures your floral gift is received with the right sentiment.

A SUSTAINABLE ALTERNATIVE
In today’s eco-conscious world, not everyone is a fan of fresh-cut flowers due to their short lifespan. A wonderful alternative is gifting a potted plant or flower, which adds lasting beauty to a home. This is especially thoughtful when visiting someone’s home, as it contributes to their decor. However, always check for potential allergies or pet toxicity beforehand.

CONCLUSION
Flowers are a timeless and meaningful gift, but only when chosen with care and consideration. By being mindful of symbolism, scent sensitivities, cultural traditions, and sustainability, you ensure that your floral gift is a delight rather than a misstep.
This spring, let’s celebrate the season with flowers - but let’s not forget grace and etiquette along the way!

Yours sincerely,
Katarina
