TRUE OR FALSE? Debunking 5 Common Etiquette Myths

TRUE OR FALSE? Debunking 5 Common Etiquette Myths

Oftentimes, etiquette does not have good reputation due to its misunderstood nature. We tend to hear words like ‘‘snobbery’’ or ‘‘arrogance’’ used interchangeably with the word ‘‘etiquette’’. This misconception then casts a shadow and creates etiquette myths that might surprise you.

Let’s debunk them together:

Myth 1: ETIQUETTE IS TIME-CONSUMING
False.
It might take some time to learn new manners, but ultimately, etiquette saves us time and energy. Once we master the art of polite manners, it will become rooted in our nature, hence, we won’t need to overthink or be nervous about how to act in certain situations anymore.

Myth 2: ETIQUETTE IS OLD-FASHIONED
False.
While it’s true that social or business events don’t require such high level of formality as before, polite and respectful behaviour is still very much relevant. A kind, pleasant atmosphere where respect is the buzz word goes a long way.

Myth 3: ETIQUETTE IS CARVED IN STONE
False (partially).
While there are certain etiquette rules that enjoy their longevity, others keep getting updated organically, just as the society evolves. For instance, back in the days, a hand-kiss was a common way to greet a lady. Nowadays, a handshake is much more appropriate and a hand-kiss greeting remains in highly conservative or diplomatic contexts only.

Myth 4: ETIQUETTE SUPPRESSES SPONTANEITY
False.
Etiquette allows for a wide range of behaviour and does not go against different character traits. One can be honest without being offensive. One can be friendly without sharing gossip. Etiquette does not block self-expression, it refines it. Unless of course, one enjoys being rude :-)

Myth 5: PRACTICING ETIQUETTE MAKES YOU A SNOB
False.
Did you know that behaving in a snobbish, pretentious way actually goes against etiquette and proper manners? We can behave in a respectful way towards others and our surroundings without being patronising or judging others if they do not do the same.

While some etiquette rules might not hold true due to the natural evolution in the society, others are timeless and will keep accompanying us as long as respect and politeness exist.
